Sometimes it will see the CDs as audio and sometimes it will try to run them and just go to a black screen. I've read that PS2s just stop reading PS1 disks after a while, so I might just get.

I was reading on forums that people had problems with the motor not spinning for the PS2 Slim. That when they closed the lid, the Ps2 wouldn't read anything. I did once have a later PS2 Slim that I had done the disc swap mod to play burned PS1 games (used it to play ONE burned game which I wound up buying a legit copy shortly after). It actually stopped reading PS2 discs shortly after the mod. I took the thing apart, removed all traces of the "mod" and put it back together. It worked after that. I acquired a malfunctioning slim PS2 (70000 series). The disc motor is not spinning discs properly. I know for a fact that the disc motor is malfunctioning because initially, the discs would not spin at all. When I realized that, I unscrewed the unit and I disconnected the disc motor.
